Citrus College Women's Soccer came up just short against the No. 2-ranked team in the state, falling 2-1 to College of the Canyons on Tuesday, September 30.
The loss moves the Owls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in WSC South play, while the Cougars stay unbeaten at 8-0 and 2-0 in conference.
Canyons struck just a minute into the match with a shot that deflected off the crossbar and in, then doubled its lead in the 39th minute to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. Citrus was limited to two shots in the opening half, while the Cougars fired off seven.
The Owls found their rhythm after the break, creating six second-half chances. In the 71st minute, Aubrianna Mejia set up Bridget Ward for a goal that cut the deficit to 2-1. Citrus continued to press, putting two more shots on frame, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Ward, Alexia Leon, and Andrea Meza each tallied two shots on goal, while Angelina Gonzalez added another. Goalkeeper Liliana Miramontes kept Citrus in the match with seven saves on nine shots faced.
The Owls return to action Friday, October 3, with a 6 p.m. conference matchup at Antelope Valley.
