Owls Battle Back but Fall 75–66 to Bakersfield

Citrus College women's basketball came up just short in a 75–66 conference loss to Bakersfield College on Wednesday night. The Owls fall to 6-13 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Renegades improve to 12-7 overall and 4-1 in conference.

Bakersfield stayed a step ahead throughout the night, outscoring Citrus in every quarter except the third.

The Renegades jumped out to an 18–12 lead after the opening quarter, knocking down 3 of 6 shots from three-point range and forcing seven Citrus turnovers. Bakersfield extended its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Owls 17–10 to take a 35–22 lead into halftime.

Citrus responded with its strongest stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Bakersfield 27–19 to trim the deficit to five, 54–49, heading into the final period. Lexi Navarro sparked the rally with 11 points in the quarter, hitting 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, while Jhavmine Ave added 10 points during the surge.

The Owls continued to battle in the fourth quarter, pulling within four points on multiple occasions, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Bakersfield shot 48.3 percent from the field (28 of 58) and connected on 7 of 13 three-pointers, while Citrus finished at 37.9 percent shooting (22 of 58) despite knocking down eight threes. The Renegades held a significant edge on the glass, outrebounding the Owls 41–26, and scored 34 points in the paint. Citrus was perfect at the free-throw line, going 14 for 14, and forced 21 Bakersfield turnovers, converting those miscues into an 18–12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Lexie Navarro and Jhavmine Ave led Citrus with 20 points apiece which led all scorers. Navarro knocked down six three-pointers and finished 6-of-15 from the field, while Ave attacked the rim and went a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Maileeh Suasti added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Setsianna Kraynak contributed six rebounds, a block and a steal.

Brianna Gomez chipped in nine points, and Raynise Beserra provided energy off the bench with five points, six rebounds and three steals. Citrus finished with balanced contributions across the lineup as it pushed Bakersfield late despite the loss.

Citrus returns to the road this Saturday for a conference matchup at West Los Angeles College, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
