Men's Soccer opened up it's Western State Conference South season in style on Tuesday, snagging a win over visiting College of the Canyons, and ending the season-long losing streak. The Owls took the game handily, 4-1.
The Owls jumped right into the game, literally not hesitating to attack, as the Owls put their first goal on the board in the 3rd minute of regulation play. The goal was scored any Sergio Gonzalez, the sophomore midfielder's 1st goal of the season. Gonzalez was gifted a beautiful ball by Imer Figueroa, and he took it on the volley, sending a rocket at the Cougar goal and nearly putting a hole in the back of the net.
The Owls continued pressuring the Cougars, keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field almost the entire first half. Citrus would strike again unanswered, when in the 19th minute, Gonzalez added his 2nd goal of the year, this time unassisted on another monstrous volley. That put the Owls up 2-0. Canyons quickly answered with a goal of their own in the 20th minute, but that would mark the end of any significant offense by Canyons, as the Owls shut them down defensively and took advantage of scoring opportunities in transition. At the 45 minute mark, David Pineda scored a goal on a nice assist by Mateo Bonilla, putting the Owls up 3-1. Citrus maintained control of the rest of the match , adding an insurance goal in the 75th minute by Darold Rose who was assisted by Christopher Olivares.
Having busted through their losing streak, the Owls are now focused on winning every conference game that remains. Citrus takes the field again on Tuesday at Antelope Valley for a conference match. Kickoff is at 4:00 PM.
