Bio
Andy Smith was hired as the head baseball coach/program coordinator ahead of the fall of 2025. He comes over to Citrus from 210 freeway neighbor Chaffey College, where he spent the previous four seasons as the head baseball coach, and two years prior as an assistant coach. Andy also served in the kinesiology department as an adjunct faculty member and enjoyed a brief stint as acting director of athletics in the fall/winter of 2024.
Chaffey baseball compiled an overall record of 110-59-1 record during Andy's time heading the program, including 3 consecutive IEAC championships from 2023-2025, a conference record of 77-19, 3 consecutive years with an All-American, and some of the top offenses in the state. Chaffey finished the 2025 season with an all-time program record of 34 wins. Additionally, he was tagged as the conference coach of the year in 2023 and 2025 and saw over 50 players matriculate to four-year schools during that time.
Offenses have particularly thrived under Andy's watch, having four consecutive seasons with a .300 team average, a .400 hitter, and top 10 rankings in the state in stolen bases all four years. In 2025, his offense was 3rd in the state in batting average (.344) and doubles, 4th in on base percentage and total hits, 5th in stolen bases, and 8th in home runs.
Coach Smith also takes great pride in matriculating student-athletes to the four-year level. Every sophomore that has graduated from his programs have received opportunities to continue their playing careers at the next level, with some choosing alternative paths such as choosing to focus solely on their academics, a life in law enforcement, military service, fire service, trade schools, and many other paths-all of which are celebrated.
Prior to his time at Chaffey, Andy was an assistant coach at NAIA/NCAA Division 2 transitioning Biola University from 2016-2018. During this time, the Eagles saw their winningest seasons in over a decade. Smith assisted with hitters, baserunning, recruiting, outfielders, academic success, camps, summer ball placement, and scouting reports.
Coach Andy looks forward to bringing a blend of new school and old school approaches to coaching and leadership for this program and operates under the mission statement of "building champions on and off the field", as well as the mantra of "surround yourself with good people."
He wants players and families interested in coming to Citrus College to know:
"These players will be taken care of. They will be invested in and cared about not just in regard to their baseball careers, but their long-term development as a person and contributor to society. We will work hard to build excellent habits that translate to success on and off the field."
He wants alumni of the program to know:
"We celebrate and welcome you back to "The Nest" at any time. The invitation is and will remain open for any proud Owl alumni to come feel connected to the program and get to know the people here."
Andy completed his baseball career at Biola University after spending time at Santa Barbara City College as well as Dixie State University. He completed his BA in communication studies from his hometown school of UNLV and completed a MS degree in Kinesiology from California Baptist University. He currently resides in Fullerton, CA with his beautiful wife and son.
